Will Just Cause 4 be at E3 2018?

It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas, but it might as well be for gamers all around the globe. E3 is set to begin June 12, 2018, and it is sure to be a big week for gamers. There has been a lot of rumors and leaks going around, one of which is Just Cause 4. Will we be seeing a new entry to this series? If so, what do we want to see in the new adventure?

Just Cause is one of those series of games that just captures me and pulls me in like no other. The Michael Bay-like explosions, the feeling like you are playing an action movie, the feeling of doing whatever you want in a massive open map is a feeling like no other. I never played the original Just Cause, but I played Just Cause 2 when I saw my friend playing it back in high school. I spent so many late summer nights playing that game and drinking Mountain Dew Livewire (still my beverage of choice when playing any JC game). Just Cause 3 was my personal game of the year when it came out. The game is hilarious and has so much action, I couldn’t take my eyes off of the TV when it came out.

I find it doubtful that we’ll see a Just Cause 4 announcement at this years E3. I only say that because Avalanche Studios tends to space out their releases for this game series significantly. The first title came out in 2006, Just Cause 2 came out in 2010, and Just Cause 3 came out in 2015. Those are some large gaps for the game’s releases. It has been three years since we have seen a new JC game. It feels like a long time, but in their release cycles, that’s too soon. Maybe we’ll be surprised at E3, but I am not sure.

The Just Cause games keep getting bigger and bigger. Just Cause 3 was announced in 2014. In the announcement article (which you can read here), it says that they were working on the game for a few years. Now, typically when people say a “few”, people normally relate that to three. So if we think of it like that, the game took three years to develop before we even got the first trailer which dropped a year before it came out. Yes, they would probably reuse assets and not have to rework a ton of stuff since it would be on the same consoles as Just Cause 3 (JC2 came out on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC), but the time it takes to fully create worlds in games and new assets takes some time. A three-year cycle just doesn’t make sense when we think in those terms unless it is the only game the entire studio is working on. Though, I also need to realize that just because it is announced, that doesn’t mean it has to be released this year. It may be announced this year and released in 2019, which would fall in line with their development cycle for the series, as well as their announcement trends.

Now, let’s pretend that we do see an announcement for Just Cause 4. What would we want in the game? One of the main complaints I’ve had about the series is that they don’t create dedicated online servers. Does anyone remember playing the Just Cause 2 Online mod on Steam? I don’t typically play online games, but that game is so much fun when you’re driving down the road and you randomly see a boat flying in the sky following a massive explosion in front of you because someone drove a bus off of a cliff. The absolute anarchy that goes on in that game when you play online is something that you just don’t see anywhere else. I don’t even see that with Grand Theft Auto Online. Just Cause 2 is still the only version of the game to have an online mod. It was, unfortunately, missing from Just Cause 3, and trust me, I noticed and I was very upset. Even if they came out and presented Just Cause 3.5 with an added online mode, it would get game of the year again from me instantly. I’m a simple man. Just give me some new toys to play with and I’ll be happy. In Just Cause 4’s case, give me a massive online mode and I’ll be thrilled.

What do you think? Do you think we’ll be seeing Just Cause 4? What would you want to see in the game? Let us know below!

Update: Just Cause 4 was announced and is now available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC
